Spring/Summer Wardrobe Mix and Match

It’s been a long winter in my city, and while April didn’t exactly bring any showers, I am wishing for May flowers. With spring comes the shedding of winter clothing – no more tights underneath pants, layered sweaters, heavy down or wool coats and shearling lined boots. Bring on the dresses, tank tops, peep-toe shoes and sandals because I’m ready for what’s sure to be too short of a spring/summer season.

Now, I can’t really afford to purchase a brand new wardrobe every few months (perhaps one day I’ll have a closet like Carrie in Sex and the City and lottery winnings to do so). However, I have nonetheless found inspiration for looks that I’d like to try this year. I’ve talked about using H&M’s dressing room feature in a previous post before and I’m going to use it again to show you some of the looks I’ve put together for the next few months.

Though shops like H&M, Forever 21 and numerous other budget clothing stores gear towards quick trends, I don’t necessarily believe in following them. I think you should wear what looks good on your body and what makes you feel confident. If something grabs your attention, try it on. You might be surprised at how good it looks on you. My one tip: be polished, but don’t forget to have a little fun with some colours and patterns, even if it’s subtle.

I myself am a bit of a hoarder with my clothes. I have items that have lasted me from high school to university and, now, six years and counting from graduating with my bachelor’s degree. What I’ve learned over the years about fashion is that everything is cyclical and almost anything can be reworked down the road. As long as it still fits you well and it’s in good condition and you have the space, keep it. I’m sure with a little digging in my own closet, I’ll be able to piece together similar styles to the ones shown. The different combinations will feel like a completely fresh warm weather wardrobe without having to spend a fortune on anything new.

All that’s left is hoping that the sunshine comes out to play and that the wind eventually dies down, so that we can truly enjoy this time of year that always seems to fly by too quickly for our liking.

Edmonton Bakers Make Life Brighter

Joint Photo

Left: Tiramisu cupcakes from Beyond The Bowl Baking
Right: Lemon cupcakes from Cupcakes by Courtney

I’ve been fighting a cold these last seven days. And it’s starting to take its toll, especially because it’s a week before I leave for a trip to see The Rolling Stones. I don’t want to be sick during my holiday, so I’m doing my best to get rid of it, but without the help of meds. I’m drinking plenty of fluids and rinsing with Listerine. However, it’s persisting and maybe it’s because my busy schedule isn’t really allowing me the rest or sleep I should be striving for. Sometimes settling down for a bit and having a nap is a good thing for us. While I know this probably won’t happen today, I wish I could sit on the couch and just veg out with a plate of cupcakes and some movies or a book. That, for me, would be a day of heaven.

Cupcakes really help to brighten my day and I’m certain that others feel the same way. I count myself as a connoisseur of the delightful treats, and in my home city of Edmonton, Alberta I have tried the majority of the cupcake shops in town (thank you Groupon and all the other deal sites for contributing to any weight I may or may not have gained over the last few years). Some of the shops I’ve bought from have been great and others could certainly use improvements.

Yet I’m currently counting myself lucky because I now not only know just one, but two bakers who have ventured into the world of cupcake creations over the last year! I share them with you in the hopes that you will find the perfect dessert for your upcoming celebrations or your own personal indulgences.

Both ladies bake part-time outside of their full-time jobs, so if you would like to order anything from them, a few days notice would be great.

Cupcakes by Courtney is the first.

Courtney really started baking for others last fall with a few trusty recipes including Red Velvet and Irish Car Bombs and has been experimenting with new flavours ever since. She is a fellow bridesmaid in our friend’s wedding this coming August and will be providing peacock themed cupcakes for the reception in place of a traditional cake. We did a tasting one evening and the chocolate cake with whisky chocolate ganache filling and white chocolate cream cheese icing was the winner! Other delicious sounding flavours include:

Courtney also makes beautiful cake pops for those who prefer a sweet in a bite-sized package. I believe she can also do some cakes sugar or butter free. Please inquire with her for specifics.

The second is Beyond the Bowl Baking.

Bev

Bev of Beyond the Bowl Baking

I’ve worked with Bev for a few years now. She heads the United Way committee at our office and as a group we’ve been holding bake sales annually in which Bev’s cakes are the undisputed star. They get snapped up within minutes of the table opening, so it just makes sense for Bev to bring her baking prowess to the masses. She’s worked hard to expand her recipes for her launch this April and I have been lucky to be one of her few product taste testers. I will tell you that, without a doubt, you will not be disappointed.

A new flavour seems to come out every week or so (like the fairy godmother of baked goods I probably gain a pound just smelling one, but it’s worth it – just eat healthy the rest of the week!) and each one becomes my new favourite.

Bev’s uniquely filled cupcakes are moist, deliciously flavourful and topped with the perfect amount of frosting. Here are some samples of what she’s got on her order form right now (the list is growing!):

Chocolate Raspberry

Bev also makes some slab cakes. I would highly recommend her pumpkin cake (my personal favourite) and her Guiness gingerbread ones.

Her order form includes pricing: BtBB 2013. If you would like to place an order, please fill it out and e-mail to Bev at beyondthebowlbaking@gmail.com. You may also click on the link above her photo to view her Facebook page.

I hope that these cupcakes bring happiness to your best days and perhaps even your worst. People always ask me why I love these single serving desserts (I was probably obsessed with trying every one I could get my hands on for a time) and I think it’s because they bring a little sunshine into my life. And, I believe that’s something that the world can use more of.

How to Make Sure Your Friend Has the Best time on Their First Trip to NYC

Exif_JPEG_PICTURE

Times Square billboards

Why, crowdsource some ideas from the writers and readers of the blogosphere, of course!

New York City is one of my absolute favourite places to visit. The first time I went there was as a child on a bus tour with my parents. Since then I’ve been four more times – all have been memorable, but the best might just have been the week I spent there after freshman year of university with my friend Ashley. I’d never been on a trip without my family prior to that and the two of us had an absolute blast. We walked 60 blocks a day weaving our way all over the city and we never ran out of things to do. That’s the best thing about NYC. It literally never sleeps and there’s always something going on.

This coming winter will mark my sixth venture to New York and this time around I’ll be joined by one of my girlfriends. It’s going to make it a half dozen visits for me, but a first for my friend Kendra. I want her to love it as much as I do, which really isn’t difficult.

We already have quite the ‘To Do’ list:

1) See P!nk in concert (this spurred the whole trip when we couldn’t get tickets to her show at home)

2) Go to an NBA game

3) Pretty much all the tourist attractions (Statue of Liberty – hopefully the statue is reopened by then, Empire State Building, Times Square, etc.)

4) See a Broadway (or Off-Broadway) show – we’re not picky

5) Play Accomplice (NYC mystery play/scavenger hunt)

5) Eat!!

A visit to Norma’s for the Waz-za Waffle is a must in my book!

6) Shop – outlets here we come! SoHo, too!

7) See the lighting of the Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center – Dec. 4th!

8) Museums – I can literally spend a full day at MoMA

Does the naked cowboy still come out in winter?

So what am I hoping to learn from my fellow bloggers and readers? I’m sure many of you either live in NYC or have visited before. Everyone has a different and unique experience of the cities they go to.

What are your favourite memories of NYC? What’s something that someone who’s been there several times and someone who’s never been will both love? Anything that you think is overhyped and not worth the money to see? Neighbourhoods that are a must to go to? Restaurants that will satisfy our foodie palates without costing an arm and a leg?

One of the downfalls of the city is that, yes, you can do a ton in just a weekend, but, no, you won’t manage everything. No matter how hard you try you will need to make a trip back in the future and that’s A-OK.

Your suggestions are appreciated and we will make every effort to do as many of them as possible.

As always, thanks!

Photostream: London UK Holiday

Well, it’s been awhile since I’ve done a photostream post. My last was after my trip to Toronto in June/July 2012. This time I’m sharing pictures of my travels to London (in the UK, not Ontario).

I tried to do it all and for the most part I think I succeeded in seeing as many of the sites, eating the food, visiting the galleries and museums, tube and double decker bus riding, walking, shopping and show watching as I possibly could have in just 8 days.

I stayed in the Hammersmith district at the Best Western Plus Seraphine Hammersmith, which was excellent. Their staff was quite friendly and helpful (contrary to reviews we read prior to leaving on our trip). And, though the room was small for three people, it wasn’t actually any worse than others I’ve stayed at. The bathroom, thank goodness, was normal sized and the double bed more than accommodated two people. If you’re thinking of European standards, this exceeds it byfar.

Other than that, we mostly stayed within zones 1 & 2, making good use of our unlimited weekly transit pass. We took in Trafalgar Square, went to the Victoria and Albert Museum, saw a performance of The Woman in Black, now in its 24th year at the Fortune theatre in the West End, had high tea at Fortnum and Mason, shopped at Primark (fabulous clothes for affordable prices – their limited edition collection is amazing) and ate at the pubs as well as the ever-popular Pret A Manger, among many more things.

However, the best part of the trip for me was seeing singing group, Girls Aloud, at the O2 arena on their 10 year anniversary tour (please stay together!). I actually cried a little. It was like seeing the Spice Girls in Las Vegas in 2007 on their reunion tour or seeing Kylie Minogue live. Like the previous concerts, I never expected to see them in front of my very eyes. Yet, I decided to take this trip just for them. I’m so glad I did. Not only was the show amazing, but the whole experience was much better than what I recall of my last trip to London.

While this is not my whole collection of photos (I won’t bore you with the over 1000 I took during my time there), these are my favourite ones. I took the time to Instagram them when I got home. I find them a little more pleasing this way. At least until I have a chance to edit the other 900+.

I hope you enjoy perusing the images. Maybe they’ll spark a memory of your own trip to that vibrant, historical city. Or perhaps they’ll inspire you to visit one day. And, if you like, please take a moment to share with me your recollections of London or what you wish to see when you’re there in the future.

My All-Time Favourite Rom-Com

With Valentine’s Day 2013 about a week and a half behind us, the occasion got me thinking about my favourite romantic comedies. There are plenty I’ve enjoyed over the years, including: Bridesmaids (some may question this one, but it really is one), Crazy, Stupid, Love. The Proposal, Love Actually, Two Weeks Notice, Notting Hill, Pretty Woman and Breakfast at Tiffany’s.

Despite all of those, which bring me happiness in different ways, I am inclined to say that my all-time favourite rom-com is not listed above. In fact, I would say that my favourite would have to be When Harry Met Sally. Back in 1989, I think it pushed the bounds of a romantic comedy a little bit – something Bridesmaids decided to take way further in 2011. However, it’s not the famous Meg Ryan (who was beautiful back then) diner orgasm scene or the classic New Year’s Eve proclamation of love at the end (it gets me everytime) that really sticks with me. What I look forward to the most is the old couple at the beginning telling the story of how they met, and then at the end of the movie, Harry and Sally recalling how they fell in love.

I’m always intrigued by how people meet their significant others. Some stories are a little mundane maybe, but when people think back, it probably means the world to them. In Cougar Town‘s most recent episode, Flirting with Time, the couples all discussed how they came to know one another, recalling a number of meet cute situations.

I hope that one day I’ll have a great story of my own to tell, but until then, I’d really like it if you could share yours. I’d also love it if you could take a moment to tell me your favourite rom-com and why.

Remember, everyone deserves to be loved. No matter who you are, love is all around.
